Encouragé depuis des années par son entourage, Jacob Banks a fini par croire en lui pour une carrière dans la musique. Et tant mieux !
A la mort d’un ami en 2011, Banks chante aux funérailles et hypnotise l’auditoire grâce à une voix baryton d’ écorché vif. En 2013, il a déjà à son actif quelques musiques pour des publicités et une participation à l’album de la formation londonienne « Plan B ». Puis tout s’enchaine : Sorti de son E.P. « Monologue », des programmations intensives sur les radios anglaises et une première partie d’Emeli Sandé. Deux ans plus tard, deuxième E.P. Intitulé « The Paradox ».
« The Boy Who Cried Freedom », nouvel E.P., est inspiré et habité d’une force tranquille qui vous prend rapidement. Un artiste passionné se repère dès la pochette. Banks ne déroge par à cette règle. « Unknown (to you) » est de ces titres sensibles qui entrent dans vos vies pour ne jamais en sortir. Jacob Banks s y donne entièrement vocalement. Sur « Chainsmoking » l’ambiance est électronique et gospel avec des réminiscences du « Chronic » de Dr Dre. « Unholy War » prend une direction plus acoustique.
Timbaland réalise un remix du superbe « Unknown (to you) » en insistant un peu plus sur la force de la mélodie et sur la puissance des voix. Sorti en mars 2017 en digital, le E.P. est désormais disponible en CD. Sept titres et aucun déchet : A posséder absolument et à suivre de prêt. A 26 ans, ce nigérian de culture britannique semble promis à une belle carrière.

Birmingham, England-born R&B artist Jacob Banks was regularly encouraged by a close friend to pursue a career in music, following the many local gigs that the pair attended. When his friend passed away in 2011, Banks sang at his funeral and subsequently focused his attention on ensuring that a wide audience heard his smooth and calm baritone voice. In 2012, a regional category at the MOBO UnSung awards was only one of a handful of competitions that he was successful in that year. By the time 2013 came around, he had already recorded his debut EP and supported East London hip-hop artist Plan B. Following the release of the EP The Monologue, in January he began to receive regular airplay on mainstream U.K. radio and was also asked to support Emeli Sandé on her spring 2013 tour. By the summer his soulful vocals appeared on Wretch 32’s minor U.K. hit « Doing OK, » and the pair planned to work on further material. Two years later, he delivered the EP The Paradox, which included the single « Monster, » featuring Avelino. Also around this time, Banks guested on several tracks, appearing onSigma’s « Redemption » and SeeB’s « What Do You Love? » In 2016, he released the single « Monster 2.0, » featuring Boogie. The following year, he returned with the Boy Who Cried Freedom EP, featuring the singles « Unholy Water » and « Chainsmoking. »
