Nous les avions rencontrés en 2017 pour la sortie de « Love Safe« . Un vrai plaisir de retrouver le duo « Bain » pour la sortie de son nouvel opus. Rencontre.
Musiculture : Quoi de différent sur cet album ? / What is different on this new album?
Bain : et bien, les premières choses qui me viennent à l’esprit sont que cet album est plus rythmé, meilleur pour la danse et je chante plus. Notre approche de la production est différente : davantage de sons de batteries samplées et un son moins « live ». Nous avons fait ces choix parce que bien que très influencés par le R&B classique, la soul et le funk, nous sommes également très impliqués dans le R&B d’aujourd’hui, le hip-hop et dans la « House / EDM ». Il nous a semblé qu’ainsi nous aurions plus de contrôle sur le mix final.
Well, a few main things that come to mind are that the album has a more uptempo, danceable vibe and I am singing more. We also approached the production a bit different than our first album by using more sample based drums and having a bit less of a live feel. We went this route because along with being heavily influenced by classic R&B, Soul, and Funk we are also really into Modern R&B, Hip Hop, and some House/EDM styles. We felt this would give us more control sonically to get the mixes sounding like we envisioned.
M : Où avez-vous rencontré les artistes invités sur l’album ? / where have you met the artists invited on this album ?
B : Pour la plupart, nous les connaissons depuis plus de quinze ans dans le milieu musical de Minneapolis. Nous avons une longue histoire avec les amis musiciens présents sur cet album. Cela va du pote colocataire dans le passé au prof en passant par des membres de nos anciens groupes. Parfois, ça me ramène à mon tout premier groupe « Circa » de 2001. C’est le cas avec le bassiste Archie Jackson ou la chanteuse Kendra Glenn. J’ai rencontré Leroy « Boogie » Greer sur « instagram ». Un jour, je m’étais mis en tête de trouver un percussionniste qui pourrait enregistrer seul avant de nous renvoyer le fruit de son travail. Je voulais simplifier le temps de production à son maximum. J’étais donc en recherche sur « instagram » et en une minute, je suis tombé sur une vidéo de Boogie. Je l’ai immédiatement contacté et c’est un plaisir de travailler avec lui. Il apporte une indéniable valeur ajoutée avec ses percussions.
Pour Walter Chancellor Jr. (Prince, Chaka Khan), il était le prof d’ »Afrokeys » dans une école de musique, ici à Minneapolis. « Lady Midnight » est un incroyable chanteur et compositeur. « Afrokeys » et « Lady Midnight » ont enregistré un album sous le nom « Parables Of Neptune », rare et très difficile à trouver. Nous avons de la chance d’être entourés par un si illustre groupe sur cet album.
Most of them we know from our 15 plus years in the Minneapolis music scene. We have a lot of history with the Minneapolis musicians/friends on this album. They range from past roommates, teachers, bandmates, etc. I go all the way back to my first R&B band circa 2001 with bassist Archie Jackson and vocalist Kendra Glenn. I met Leroy « Boogie » Greer on Instagram of all places. One day I got it in my head that I wanted to collaborate with a remote percussionist that could record themselves and then send us the tracks. I wanted to streamline the production timeline if possible. I was on Instagram and decided to search The Foreign Exchange hashtag #femusic. Within a minute, I came across a video of Boogie playing and immediately reached out. We connected right away and he’s been a pleasure to work with and really elevated our recordings with his percussion additions.
Walter Chancellor Jr. (Prince, Chaka Khan) was Afrokeys’ teacher at a music production school here in Minneapolis. Lady Midnight is an amazing up and coming vocalist/songwriter. Afrokeys and Lady Midnight did an album last under the name « Parables of Neptune » which, by the way, is way under the radar and worth checking out. We are very grateful and fortunate to be surrounded by such an illustrious group on this album.

M : Le « Rob Swift » de l’album, c’est celui du collectif « X-ecutioners » ? / rob swift who is on the album : Is he the same rob swift of the X-ecutioners ?
B : En effet ! Nous avons été connectés par Rabbi Darkside, un ami commun de New York City. / Indeed. We linked up with DJ Rob Swift through a mutual friend in NYC by the name of Rabbi Darkside.
M : « Around the sun » : pourquoi ce titre ? / Around the sun : why this title ?
B : Dans une vie ou même en une année, on traverse beaucoup de choses. Tout est question de cycles et d’émotions. Je veux dire que nous sommes juste sur un rocher qui flotte dans l’espace béni par la grâce du soleil, entre autres merveilles de la nature. Afrokeys et moi sommes des mecs de l’extérieur, si je peux m’exprimer ainsi. Nous voyageons ensemble dans les « Northwoods » et au « lac supérieur » chaque année. Nous passons notre temps à pêcher et à vibrer et la nature alimente notre inspiration. Le soleil de la pochette a été pris au lever du jour au lac supérieur l’été dernier. Nous en étions à l’étape finale de l’album et ça semblait parfait. J’avais intitulé une de nos chansons « Around The Sun » et lorsque nous en sommes venus aux discussions sur le titre de l’album, ça nous a semblé évident. Quand nous tombons d’accord facilement, il est aisé d’aller de l’avant.
We all go through a lot of stuff in a given year, and lifetime. It’s about cycles and all of the emotions that come with it. I mean, we’re all just on a rock floating through space blessed by the grace of the sun amongst many natural wonders. Afrokeys and I are also outdoorsmen, so to speak. We take trips into the Northwoods and to Lake Superior together every year. Spending time fishing and vibing in nature fuels our creative flow. The sun on the album cover was taken from a photo we shot at sunrise on Lake Superior this past summer. We were in the final stages of finishing the album and it seemed fitting. I had titled one of our songs « Around the Sun » and when we discussed album names, we both had already thought that would be fitting. When we both have a preconceived notion of something, it’s typically a good sign to move forward with it.
M : Plus de trois ans entre les deux albums : Qu’est-ce qui a été le plus difficile sur cette période ? / more than three years between the two albums : what was the more difficult on this period ?
B : Nous n’avons pas commencé un an après la sortie de « Love In Blue ». C’était en gestation depuis 3-5 ans. Sur cette période, de nombreux changements dans nos vies respectives. Nous avons tous les deux de jeunes enfants et des emplois du temps bien remplis avec nos autres jobs, indispensables pour nourrir nos familles. Nous donnons aussi beaucoup d’importance à notre art et nous prenons le temps nécessaire pour qu’il soit le meilleur possible.
We didn’t start on it for about a year after « Love In Blue » came out. All in all, it was about 3.5 years in the making. During that time, there have been a lot of life changes for both of us. Mainly, the fact that we both have young children and busy schedules with our other jobs that we need to work in order to keep bread on the table. We are also very particular about the art we create, so we take our time to make sure that its the best it can be.

Avec ce nouvel album, le duo assoit un peu plus son style tout en apportant un peu de sang neuf. Bien sûr, il y a cette voix immédiatement identifiable et cette humeur un peu nostalgique. Car Bain, c’est avant tout cette douceur et cette sensualité qui font du bien aux corps et à l’âme. Mais cette fois, le duo a injecté un peu plus de groove dans sa musique. Il a aussi varié les plaisirs en faisant appel à des femmes (Lady midnight et Kendra Glenn) pour le chant. Sur « Understanding », l’ambiance est chaude à la façon d’un Maxwell sur « Black Summer’s Night ». Les cuivres et la ligne de bass sont pour beaucoup dans cette comparaison. Sur « Summer », Bain offre une belle fresque estivale, bel habillage pour votre été prochain. Finesse des sons de scratch, sax sexy et mélodie envoutante au programme.

With this new album, Bain assert his style while bringing a little new blood. Of course, there is this immediately identifiable voice and this nostalgic mood. Because Bain is above all this sweetness and sensuality that do good to the body and soul. But this time, the duo injected a little more groove into his music. He also varied the pleasures by using women (Lady Midnight and Kendra Glenn) for singing. On « Understanding », the mood is warm just like a Maxwell song on « Black Summer’s Night ».
