You are from Minneapolis, the city of Prince, the city of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, the city of Mint Condition and many others…but your music sounds really different : Was it your aim, to break with this musical past ?

I don’t think it was something that we ever really thought about.  Minneapolis definitely has rich musical roots in R&B and funk and we’re surrounded by great musicians.  I feel like the culture has been more influential than the style.

Our sound is where we intersect, musically.  We both have a diverse range of music we have studied, and energetically this was the natural vibe for us when we started making music together.

Your style is more soul. When I discovered Bain, I thought about Sade but also about Luther Vandross. In fact, I think your music is closer to the english soul artists just like Stewart Matthewman for example. Were you influenced by the britsh musicians?

Sure, I’ve definitely been influenced by English artists such as the Sade/ Sweetback and Seal…  I’ve also been heavily influenced by a lot of 60’s/70’s soul/funk/blues/r&b artists – a few of my favorites would be Shuggie Otis, Johnny Guitar Watson, and Steely Dan.

Sade, sure…. But also Erykah, D’angelo, Jill Scott, Jazzyfatnastees – Generally all the Rhodes heavy soul groups of the late 90s.

M : Quand votre carrière a t-elle débuté ? When did the band begin its career ?

We met playing in a gospel group circa 2003.  We quickly became friends and I asked if Erick wanted to come play keys in a funk band that I was in at the time.  Somewhere along the way, we started making music together.  Erick was already producing his own music at this time and I had just set up my first bedroom studio and was learning to record myself and others.  The bands I was playing in at the time all kind of dried up and I started focusing my energy on writing and recording my own works.  I had started some songs between 2007-2011 that I thought had potential.  In 2011, we formed a live band and performed a few shows in Minneapolis.  A lot of that material ended up on our first album, « Love In Blue ».

Davis was playing guitar at a black church I was hired at.  He was good, and he knew music theory, so it was really easy to communicate chords and changes with him.  He invited me to join a funk group called ‘The Curbfeelers’, and shortly after we began recording music together.  We made quite a bit of music around 2006-7, and slowed down a bit until 2011.

The quality of production is just excellent. Who is responsible for that ?

Its a joint effort.  We both play and engineer our recording sessions and we both make beats.  Erick definitely has more of a producer/arranger mindset and is key in making decisions.  I’ll have some good ideas going and show them to Erick and he’ll help make them better – that happens a lot.

We both put in a lot of time on this music.  Definitely collaborative efforts.  Davis has a lot more attention to detail about certain things, and sometimes arranging comes easier to me….  It’s really a good balance of our natural talents and tendencies.

How would you define your music ? You really have a nostalgic vibe. Why ? was music better in the past in your opinion ?

A lot of my music heroes are getting up there in age or have already passed on, so if that tells you anything, (laughs).  With that being said, there are plenty of current artists out there that I admire that are doing some really great things.  We use a lot classic/vintage instruments in our music so you’re naturally going to get some timeless sounds from that.  We really don’t strive to keep up with current music trends…  I honestly feel like we just do us.

100 years from now, we want this to be great.  Want it to capture emotion and energy in a timeless way.
